Catch them before they catch you!

Used to assess platelet function, the Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time (BMBT), should be a part of your presurgical workup, especially for those breeds predisposed to VWD (von Willebrands Disease). Platelet dysfunction can be associated with a variety of systemic disorders and patients with dysfunctional (non-adherent) platelets may fail to clot even when platelet counts are normal.   

Please Note: The Surgicutt® Bleeding Time lancet has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Because Veterinarians do not have ready access to more sophiticated methods, the BMBT test will remain an important tool for rapid assessment of platelet function and adhesion. However, a precisely calibrated incision is required to minimize variables inherent in the procedure. As a replacement for Surgicutt®, the Tenderfoot® spring-loaded lancet used for neonatal blood collection will produce a precise incision of 1 mm depth and 2.5 mm length vs. Surgicutt®  at 1 mm X 5 mm. When transitioning to the new device, we strongly suggest testing 5-10 normal patients to assess any changes to the baselines you have established for your practice.
